Hard Water in Lisbon: Limescale, Your Plumbing and What to Do

Where you see limescale

White crust on taps and shower heads, cloudy glass shower screens, a ring in the toilet bowl below the water line, white deposits in the kettle.

And where you do not see it: inside the water heater, the cistern valves, tap cartridges and the pipes themselves.

What it does to your plumbing

Shower heads and tap aerators clog, so flow gets weaker. See low water pressure in the shower.

Tap cartridges and washers wear faster because scale scratches the sealing surfaces — hence dripping taps.

Cistern fill valves stick open or closed — hence toilets that keep running.

In an esquentador, scale builds up in the heat exchanger and filters: water heats more slowly, temperature fluctuates, and the heater may switch off mid-shower. In an electric tank, scale covers the element, which works harder and fails sooner.

Removing limescale safely

Shower heads and aerators: unscrew and soak in white vinegar or a limescale remover, then brush.

Toilet bowls: use a limescale product made for toilets, left to act, then brush. Avoid mixing cleaning products.

Taps: wipe with diluted vinegar and rinse. Some finishes (brushed, coloured) can be damaged by acids — check the manufacturer's advice.

Water heaters: descaling the inside is a service job, not DIY.

Prevention that actually helps

Keep the electric water heater at a sensible temperature (around 55–60 °C). Higher temperatures deposit scale faster.

Service the esquentador every one to two years.

Wipe glass and taps dry after use if you want to avoid marks.

Replace the shower head filter and clean aerators every few months.

Is a water softener worth it in a flat?

A salt-based softener removes calcium and magnesium and does protect appliances, but it needs space, a drain, salt refills and maintenance, and it is usually installed at the main supply. In many flats there is simply no room.

Smaller options — filters on the water heater inlet, or scale inhibitors on the washing machine and dishwasher — are more practical for most apartments. Magnetic devices are sold widely; their effect is debated, so do not rely on them alone.

Is it safe to drink?

Hard water is not a health problem — calcium and magnesium are minerals you also get from food. Lisbon tap water is treated and monitored. Many people filter it only because they prefer the taste.

Kettles, coffee machines and appliances

Descale the kettle and coffee machine regularly with the manufacturer's product or citric acid. Washing machines and dishwashers benefit from the correct salt and settings for hard water — check your dishwasher's water hardness setting.

Scale on the heating element is one of the main reasons washing machines and dishwashers fail early in hard-water areas.

Glass screens and tiles

Squeegee the glass after each shower, and use a limescale cleaner weekly. Protective coatings on glass reduce build-up. On tiles, a regular clean prevents the hard crust that later needs harsh products.

Natural stone (marble, limestone) is damaged by acids — use products made for stone.

A maintenance routine that works

Monthly: clean shower heads and tap aerators, run hot water through rarely used taps.

Every few months: check cistern valves for sticking, clean shower drain traps.

Yearly: service the water heater; check the anode of an electric tank every few years.

When scale has already caused a fault — dripping, weak flow, running cistern — repairs start from 60 €.
